Press release of Classis Pacific West (Houston) convened on December 11 and 12, 2025

December 18, 2025 Houston December 2025
Classis was convened by Houston Canadian Reformed Church and hosted at Langley Canadian Reformed Church.

On behalf of the convening church, Elder Clarence Meints greeted the delegates and opened the meeting with the reading of Ephesians 4:1 – 16, the singing of Hymn 84:1, 2, and prayer. In prayer we asked the Lord to support all the churches in our Classis.

The delegates from Cloverdale examined the credentials and found them to be in good order. Classis was declared constituted, with Rev. D. Vandeburgt appointed as chairman, Rev. R. Visscher as vice chairman, and Rev. H. Alkema as clerk. Rev. J. Visscher and Rev. F. Dong were seated as advisors to the Classis (per C.O. Art. 44). The Chairman remembered with gratitude that Rev. R. Gaillard was ordained as minister of the Word in Cloverdale and that Maranatha had a 75th anniversary celebration. We also remembered our emeritus ministers.

A proposed working agenda was reviewed and adopted. Correspondence received was reviewed due to a significant amount of documentation being submitted in connection with numerous appeals.

Rev. R. Gaillard then affirmed and signed the Subscription Form as this was his first time attending Classis after being ordained in Cloverdale Canadian Reformed church.

Classis received a report submitted by church visitors Rev. T. Schouten and Rev. R. Vanderhorst.

Classis deemed an overture from Maranatha to be inadmissible due to the timing of submission and would encourage Maranatha to submit their overture to the next meeting of Classis. Classis resolved some conflicting dates, confirming that overtures to Classis should be submitted nine weeks in advance.

Instructions on the credentials from Cloverdale were noted by the chairman. The chairman then asked the delegates the questions from Article 44 (CO) and the delegates all answered in turn “yes” “yes” “no”. In response to a question from the floor, there was then a discussion regarding how oversight operates among various church plants and mission works within the Classis.

Classis then went into closed session to deal with four separate appeals. The advisory committees worked into the evening and Classis resumed the next day, December 12, 2025, at which time an alternate delegate from Cloverdale was seated. The Chairman opened the day by reading from Isaiah 11:1-9 and reflecting on the passage. Classis then sang from Hymn 16:1, 3 and the chairman led in prayer.

Classis completed the work it was doing in closed session.

The next Classis is to be convened by Langley at 9 am on April 23rd, 2026. The proposed Chairman is to be provided by Langley-Refuge, the Vice-chairman by Smithers, and the Clerk by Surrey Maranatha.

Personal question period was made use of. Censure according to Article 34 (CO) was not deemed necessary. The executive was instructed to complete the Acts, and the Press Release was read and approved. The chairman closed classis with prayer, after which the delegates sung Hymn 8.

In the prayers of Classis, we brought before the Lord the people in the Sumas flats who were being impacted by flooding. We also prayed for Han and Cara Lee and the safe arrival of their sixth child.

For Classis Pacific West,

R. Visscher (vice-chairman at that time).
